Our Food Matters

Leading The Natural Health Revolution

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what good foods to eat while nursing are?  My friend has a one month old baby who suffers from severe colic.  She's tried everything and I'd love to give her some ideas on food she could try eating that are nutritious but won't irritate the baby's stomach.

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for connecting with us.

As movie producers and not health practitioners legally we are unable to offer any specific health advise, nor can we endorse any specific products. We are here to help guide you in the direction of those who can offer you these things and offer you a support system for healing yourself.

Before making any dietary changes I'd suggest consulting with a natural healthcare practitioner - you can use our practitioner directory guide to help find someone local to you (http://www.foodmatters.tv/_webapp/Practitioner%20Directory).

Doing a detox while pregnant or breastfeeding generally isn't a good idea as excess toxins and heavy metals will end up circulating to your baby, this is also a time to build, rather than cleanse to ensure that your baby has all the necessary building blocks to start his/her life. I'd hold off doing a cleanse until after you have finished breastfeeding and spend this time building up your nutrition by including as many good things in your diet as possible and gently crowding out anything that isn't beneficial, but go slowly - no extreme juicing or detox programs.

Aside from this...
  • Water, water, water
  • Large glass of warm/hot water with the juice of 1-2 lemons first thing in the morning before anything else
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables in abundance - juice, blend and eat whole
  • Exercise - hugely important - rebounding is a great one for lymphatic system, walking is also great
  • Dry skin brushing - excellent for lymphatic health
  • A clean diet - think along the lines of salads, fresh juices, stir-fries, steamed veggies, seasonal fruits, good-quality oils, nuts, seeds. Build your diet around complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, brown rice), lean protein (eggs, chicken, fish, legumes and organic meat if you eat it) and healthy fats (eggs, avocados, nuts, seeds, good quality oils - coconut and rice bran oil along with butter and ghee are the best for cooking and organic, preferably raw, dairy if you eat it).

Also, I have googled about this topic and found these interesting articles that might help your friend
Wishing you and your friend wellness.

I agree with ourfoodmatters response.

On the other hand, 'm giving you the underlying cause behind your friend's baby colic condition.

The baby's tummy hurts and has terrible headache. The baby can’t sleep and cranky. One more thing: he/she can’t ask for help because he/she's only two weeks old! Just cry. And cry. And cry.
It indicates something isn't right.

Indigestion - Infantile colic was first thought to be merely indigestion. The most widely accepted definition of colic today is “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours.”

Birth Trauma - If a baby is inconsolable, it’s hard to know if it’s a digestive disturbance. Consider another explanation. Upon examination, we often find spinal distortions in the baby’s upper cervical spine. These babies are probably suffering from head and neck pain. This is especially common if there was a difficult birth.

While large scale research results are lacking, and colic is considered a condition that resolves on its own with the passage of enough time, there are many case studies showing improvement, sometimes dramatic, among colicky babies with vertebral subluxations.
Not a Cure

If vertebral subluxation is present, interfering with the proper function of any part of the body, restoring proper nervous system control often allows the body to heal. This may happen regardless of age and regardless of what the particular symptoms are called.

This is Dr. Patrick Kelley and I am a newbie here. Actually this is my first post. And just like the majority of you I am very much aware and always take care about health. Hope this post enlighten you about the colic condition. Thanks and Have a great day!
