Hi, I ordered 250 g of spirulina (625 tablets) online and the package arrived today. I read that 10g is the recommended daily dose. So I have to take 25 tablets a day?! Isn't that a little too much?

My understanding is about 3 grams a day or 6 of those tablets.

I also bought spirulina, but I took powder, not pills.

I have the same question and I'm begging you for a grounded answer. ;)

On the package of the product and in many websites it's written that the recommended daily intake is 3-5g.

However, I found some webs that claim you can take as much spirulina as you want because it is food, not a drug.

Here's a quote from a site I found:

Spirulina

  • Disease-fighting dose: 20 grams / day
  • Maintenance dose: 10 grams / day
  • Athlete dose: as much as 60 grams / day
  • Upper limit: there is no upper limit. You can eat spirulina like food. If you eat "too much," you will simply get full"

The thing is that the many brands of Spirulina are all going to vary with the amount in each capsule. That being said all of us are going to vary as well and what may be a good dose for one person might not be for another.

There is little research on exact doses however it has been suggested that we can reap the benefits from Spirulina with as little as 2-3g per day. Administration and dosage will vary on what you want to achieve, your age and your health. So a good start would be to follow the guidelines on the product you've bought and notice if you feel a difference - use your body as a guide and really listen to it. 

As there is no upper limit, if you eat "too much" and get "too full" it would be due to the high protein content resulting in a high level of satiety - still aim to get your required nutrients from a bunch of other great sources as well! The best diet contains variety and is a colourful one!

Hi, Rachel! Thank you for the quick answer.
I was asking about the dose of Spirulina because I'm vegan for 2 months. The problem is that I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week and when I ate meat and milk products(it was 2 months ago as I said) I achieved really good results, without any supplements. But now, as a vegan, I lost about 4 or 5 kilos, and my concern is that I might continue to lose weight and I think this would be possible if I don't receive enough proteins with my food.
That's the main reason why I bought Spirulina - as a source of proteins. I bought bio hemp protein powder, but I read some statements in the Internet that all protein powder, no matter if it's made from hemp seeds, soya, etc. have toxic chemicals in them. And I stop taking this thing.
Could you give me an advice, please? Tell me a good and HEALTHY vegan source of proteins?

Hi Peter, 

This is a pretty good question - and a little bit of a tough one because as we know, everyone is different! 

My suggestion is probably to try and get your protein from a variety of different sources not just spirulina and to ensure that your are distributing your protein intake over the entire day not just around a gym session. 

Try adding plenty of nuts, seeds and legumes to your diet as well as complete proteins (proteins that contain all the essential amino acids) these can include spirulina, goji berries and quinoa. 

As for supplements spirulina and hemp powder are probably my best suggestions - if you're concerned about chemicals just ensure you select organic varieties. I understand that you are vegan but another great protein supplement if you aren't vegan is pasture fed whey concentrate! 

And don't forget muscles also need a lot of water and B vitamins!

From my research and understanding of green or blue green algae is that it's more of a whole food and less of a supplement. So your not taking it in the same way you would take a multivitamin where it's a concentrated form of vitamins/ minerals. If you think about the powdered version your using a scoop. But for a lot of people pills are easier, including myself (I take Chlorella and take it a small handful at a time).  The manufactures form that same powder into capsules or pills. It's dried algae which has all of these wonderful atributes like a whole food, not concentrated singled out nutrients as in a supplement or vitamin. So that's why the dosages seem extreme.
